Senior Platform Architect: Closing a 10-Month Vacancy for a Major Australian Bank

What Was the Challenge?

The Senior Platform Architect role sat at the heart of the bank's digital platform agenda — modernising how customer-facing platforms are designed, built and run. It had been open for 10 months. Internal recruiters and contingent agencies had been searching within traditional banking and enterprise IT circles, but the bank actually needed someone who could re-architect their digital platforms around product-led, scale-up ways of building: API-first design, platform engineering, internal developer platforms, continuous delivery and cloud-native patterns. That profile is rare inside Australian banking and concentrated in the high-tech sector, so the search kept stalling.

How Did I Approach This Search?

I was retained on the search on an exclusive basis. I started by consulting closely with the hiring manager and engineering leadership to interrogate the position description and reframe it around the real outcome: transforming how the bank's digital platforms are architected, with scale-up engineering practices at the core. From there, I deliberately moved the search away from traditional banking talent pools and ran a targeted headhunt into the high-tech sector — global SaaS, hyper-scale consumer platforms and product-led scale-ups — across Sydney, Melbourne and key international markets. I acted as a single point of accountability across briefing, market mapping, candidate vetting, interview management and offer negotiation.

What Results Were Achieved?

Within 8 weeks of being retained, the bank appointed a Senior Platform Architect headhunted from the high-tech sector — closing a vacancy that had been open for 10 months. The successful candidate brought direct experience designing digital platforms at scale and is now embedding scale-up architectural patterns and platform engineering practices inside the bank.

Key Outcomes:

  • 10-month vacancy closed in 8 weeks

  • Role reframed around digital platform transformation

  • Talent headhunted from the high-tech sector, not traditional banking

  • Scale-up engineering practices brought into a Tier 1 bank
